Some people today have taken the liking into buying desktop terrarium kits, or nano paludarium, and set up their mini ecosystem. These desktop aquarium kits allow you to have a new hobby which promotes a more refreshing atmosphere for your room.
What is a paludarium?
For starters, a paludarium is a type of vivarium that is comprised of land and water. A vivarium is like an aquarium – an enclosed space usually made of glass – where one keeps or raises animals or plants. Usually, it seems like an ecosystem suitable for what you are keeping is already controlled in the aquarium.
Building a simple paludarium
Here in Singapore, there are now desktop aquarium kits or desktop terrarium kits that can help you set up your nano paludarium. But for those who want to set up their paludarium, they might want to start by considering three main areas: the canopy, the land, and water. Whatever the design of your paludarium may be, it must circulate on these three.
- Canopy
The canopy in a paludarium is its topmost area. A planted flora that has grown out into the top part of its enclosure forms it. You can put hardscapes on it like rocks, branches, and more. This provides shade, and security for the creatures living in the land area of your paludarium. In desktop terrarium kits, this is also included.
- Land
This is where terrestrial features will be established. A dry piece of hardscape is what separates this from the water in your nano paludarium or paludarium. Anything would do as a hardscape just so it would not affect the quality of the water.
- Water
Simply applied with water, it is essential for the ecosystem in your paludarium to thrive. This allows aquatic creatures to survive, and allows condensation to hydrate the entire tank.
This is just a short guide on things you need to know about keeping a paludarium. Desktop aquarium kits, and desktop terrarium kits are also available if you want to start keeping a nano paludarium
